East v West Wales Golf Event

FBE East v West Golf Day at Machynys Golf & Country Club, Llanelli
16 July 2008

On Wednesday 16 July 2008, FBE Cambria branch took part in the inaugural East v West Wales Golf Event held at the Nicklaus-designed Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club in Llanelli. Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club is the first Nicklaus-designed golf course in Wales, with modern links-style layout overlooking Carmarthen Bay and the Gower Peninsula, and home to the European Tours 'Ladies Championship of Europe' for the past four years.

After registration, conducted by Estelle McNally of Whitehead Building Services, competitors were treated to a pre-round cup of coffee and much-needed bacon roll before embarking on four and a half hours of golfing fun with the first tee set for 12.00pm. Format for the day was full handicap stableford, played from the gold tees. The forecast for the day was mixed – a morning of sunshine and steady winds gave way to a mixed afternoon but thankfully the rain stayed away long enough for all players to return to the clubhouse and enjoy a orange juice or two on the balcony while taking in the views over the estuary and course.

The total number of golfers on the day was 48, with a fairly even proportion from east and west, with the best 8 cards from each region deciding where the bragging rights would lie for the next 12 months. Prizes were also awarded for nearest to the pin on the 155yd 2nd and 156yd 17th hole together with longest drives on the 360yd 9th and 481yd 18th holes. Following the completion of the meal the prize-giving event took place, in which the winners of the prizes were as follows:

  • Nearest the pin 2nd hole: Owain Adams (CWA Architects)
  • Nearest to the Pin 17th hole: Owen Davies (Dean & Dyball)
  • Longest Drive on the 9th hole: Jeff Price (McCann)
  • Longest Drive on the 18th hole: Mark Ebdon (Stradform).

The main prize of a unique putter cast from the propeller of the QE2 and most importantly the bragging rights for the year ahead was awarded to the West Wales team beating the East by a mighty 3 points, with the cumulative totals being West 278pts, East 275pts proving that indeed West is best, for the moment at least!

Cambria branch would like to express thanks for all who attended and all individuals involved behind the scenes in organising what turned out to be a fantastic day. The West can now look forward to defending the putter at next year’s event, which will be held at St Mellon’s Golf Club, Cardiff.
